Jakarta, December 1st, 2021
The Indonesian Presidency in the Group of Twenty (G20) begins today, Wednesday December 1, 2021. This is a historic event for the Indonesian people where it is a trust and honor for Indonesia to accept the reins of the G20 Presidency which was previously held by Italy.
In general, with the holding of the G20 Presidency by Indonesia, it is hoped that it will add insight to the Indonesian people, especially the younger generation, that Indonesia is a big country whose existence is highly considered by other countries in the world, both in terms of economy, geographical location, and political attitude. Furthermore, in addition to being known for its hospitality, Indonesia is also known for its cultural diversity from various tribes in the archipelago as well as its beautiful and scenic nature.
In his remarks at the Opening Ceremony of Indonesia G20 Presidency which was held at Lapangan Banteng, Jakarta (12/1), the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, wanted the G20 Presidency of Indonesia not to be merely ceremonial. “Indonesia encourages G20 countries to take concrete actions. Indonesia is ready to collaborate and gather strength so that the world community can feel the positive impact of this cooperation. Indonesia must also produce major breakthroughs from the G20 forum," said President Joko Widodo.
Indonesia G20 Presidency is an opportunity for Indonesia to make a greater contribution to global economic recovery, by actively participating in building a healthier, and sustainable world governance based on independence, lasting peace and social justice. Therefore, Indonesia G20 Presidency carries the theme “Recover Together, Recover Stronger”. With this theme, Indonesia G20 Presidency is expected to provide a new spirit to create a world order that not only provides welfare and prosperity, but also ensures the sustainability of life in the future.
Indonesia G20 Presidency will focus on bringing three strategic issues, namely inclusive health management, digital-based economic transformation, and the transition to sustainable energy. Indonesia's G20 presidency is a momentum to increase economic diplomacy through efforts to create a post-crisis global economic and health architecture.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, as Chair I of the Sherpa Track Division of Indonesia G20 Presidency, said, “Indonesia G20 Presidency aims to make the world emerge from the crisis better and more resilient. This requires a transformation of the global way of working, changing mindsets and business models, taking advantage of every opportunity in the midst of a pandemic to produce new breakthroughs.”
In this Presidency, the G20 needs to focus on strengthening the multilateralism system and effective global partnerships, in order to ensure that the world economy remains open, fair, mutually beneficial, and ensures that no one is left behind, especially the poor and vulnerable groups.
Indonesia will use the G20 Presidency to fight for the aspirations and interests of developing countries, so that a fairer world governance can be created. Mainly to strengthen world solidarity in overcoming the threat of climate change and promote sustainable development.
On this occasion, Coordinating Minister Airlangga handed over a pin or assignment sign to representatives of Chairs Working Groups and Engagement Groups symbolically and launched the official G20 website address, www.g20.org. This site contains information on meeting schedules, side events, and workstreams, both from the Sherpa Track and the Finance Track.
