Market Operations and Cheap Markets are One of the Government's Steps in Fulfilling Food for the Community
Pekanbaru, February 24th, 2022
In order to maintain supply and stabilize food prices to ensure the fulfillment of the basic needs of the community, since early February this year, the Government has held a number of market operations and low-cost markets in various cities. Apart from this, this activity also aims to monitor the implementation of the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), especially for cooking oil commodities.
In a series of working visits to Riau Province, Thursday (24/02), Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto reviewed the implementation of market operations at Pasar Bawah, Pekanbaru City. Pasar Bawah is the oldest traditional market in Pekanbaru. This market has been known since the 1700s. Pasar Bawah is very well known in various circles of society as well as for tourists who come to Pekanbaru, so the local government made it as a tourist market.
The regulation on the HET for palm cooking oil that is currently in effect is based on the Minister of Trade Regulation Number 6 of 2022 which has been in effect since February 1st, 2022. The regulation states that the MRP for bulk cooking oil is Rp11,500 per liter, simple packaged cooking oil of Rp13,500 per liter, and premium packaged cooking oil of Rp14,000 per liter.
Coordinating Minister Airlangga conducted an observation and at the same time ensured the suitability of implementing MRP arrangements in the field for the sale of packaged cooking oil in traditional markets. In addition, Coordinating Minister Airlangga also asked about the availability of other food ingredients such as rice, wheat flour, sugar, eggs, and salted fish which are sold at the Pasar Bawah.
“We hope that the stock will be maintained in this market and the price of cooking oil should also be at Rp28,000 per 2 liters, so that it can meet the needs of the community. The stock of rice, sugar, and flour also looks quite fulfilled here,” continued Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
In this low-cost market, the Department of Trade, Cooperatives and SMEs of the Riau Province Government in collaboration with 4 local distributors has provided 3,000 liters of cooking oil to be sold to the public at a price of Rp24,000 per 2 liters. Perum Bulog provides 7,500 kg of rice at a price of Rp44,500 per 5 kg, and Starbudi Rosebrand provides 2,000 kg of sugar at a price of Rp9,500 per kg.
Meanwhile, for bulk cooking oil, PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia provided 2 tanks for bulk cooking oil, each containing 18,000 kg and 22,000 kg, and sold at a price of Rp10,500 per liter.
Buyers of bulk cooking oil, most of whom are retailers, are required to fill out an Integrity Pact form stating that they support the MRP cooking oil program from the Government and are willing to sell the cooking oil according to MRP and will not stockpile bulk cooking oil, simple or premium packaged cooking oil.
Furthermore, Coordinating Minister Airlangga also visited low-cost market activities in the Pelindo area which sell various basic needs or food items, especially packaged cooking oil, rice, and sugar.
“In the cheap market, cooking oil is sold below MRP. A tank is also provided here to meet the needs of bulk cooking oil. This will help retail traders as well as home industry players to get cooking oil,” said Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
Considering that the Covid-19 pandemic has not ended in Indonesia, the implementation of market operations still applies strict Health Protocols, such as the use of masks, both for buyers and sellers.
The people who were present at the location of the activity greatly appreciated this Government activity and conveyed the difficulty of getting packaged cooking oil, and they were only allowed to buy a maximum of two packages. One of the buyers, who works as a fried food and chips trader, said that he really needed cooking oil for his business and the cooking oil he bought would be sufficient to fill the stock in the next few weeks.
“If possible, an event like this could be held every three months, so people like us will be greatly helped by market operations like this. We are willing to come all the way to get this cheap cooking oil,” he said.
Also present to accompany the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs in this activity were the Deputy Minister of Trade, Members of the Indonesian House of Representatives, the Governor of Riau, and the Deputy Mayor of Pekanbaru. (rep/map/fsr)
