Yogyakarta, September 29th 2022
The third G20 Sherpa meeting has gone well and smoothly. The meeting held to discuss the G20 Leaders' Declaration draft was divided into 6 discussion sessions. This meeting was co-chaired by the Co-Sherpas G20 Indonesia, Edi Prio Pambudi and Dian Triansyah Djani.
The Leaders' Declaration is a commitment from the G20 Leaders to joint efforts in economic and health recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. The draft Declaration contains the substance of discussing the priorities of the G20 Presidency of Indonesia, namely the Global Health Architecture, Digital Transformation, and Energy Transition. The Declaration also discusses the issue of food security which is a global issue today.
The meeting also endorses concrete deliverables. In accordance with President Joko Widodo's direction so that the Indonesian G20 Presidency can generate real benefits for the Indonesian people and increase Indonesia's role and profile at the G20 forum, the G20 Indonesia Presidency introduces a new approach in producing concrete deliverables, which are projects, programs or initiatives as tangible benefits and concrete form. These projects are in line with the presidency principle, namely lead by examples for sustainable, real, and concrete development by utilizing international cooperation involving multi-stakeholder roles. Through accelerating the realization of the deliverables of these projects, the G20 Indonesia Presidency is expected to provide tangible benefits and become Indonesia's legacy for the G20.
In the discussion during the third G20 Sherpa meeting in Yogyakarta, all countries were present and all agreed to seek solutions to various global issues and problems. The atmosphere of the meeting was very conducive, with the spirit of supporting each other to find common solutions, taking into account various differences and interests. There is a strong commitment from the G20 Sherpas to encourage consensus at the G20 Head of State/Head of Government level. The Sherpas agreed to affirm and implement the commitments agreed upon at the G20 forum.
"In this meeting, we can see the joint commitment of the G20 countries to remain one, by offering solutions to global problems that occur today. The energy crisis, scarcity and rising food prices, inflation, and the sustainability of post-Covid-19 recovery are issues that are not only faced by G20 countries. This issue also affects developing countries and vulnerable countries. The Sherpas show a real commitment to strengthening the credibility of the G20 for the global community,” said Co-Sherpa Edi Prio Pambudi.
The discussion of the Leaders' Declaration material for several days at the third meeting of the G20 Sherpas which went smoothly, could not be separated from the discussion strategy starting from several issues that were relatively easy and acceptable to all countries, followed by various bilateral meetings to lobby and approach several key countries to reach an understanding and agreement.
As a follow-up, for further discussion at the technical level and discussing in more detail the substance of the Leaders' Declaration, it will be continued through virtual intercession meetings, which are scheduled to be held three times during October 2022, before being finalized at the fourth G20 Sherpa Meeting in Bali in November 2022, ahead of the G20 Summit.
