Jakarta, 7th July 2022

Next week's G20 Indonesia presidency will hold the 2nd Sherpa meeting in Labuan Bajo. This implementation is carried out back-to-back with the G20 Foreign Minister-level meeting in Bali, which is currently taking place (7-8 July 2022) and the G20 Deputy Finance and Central Bank level meeting on 13-14 July 2022 in Bali. The Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and the Minister of Foreign Affairs will attend the 2nd Sherpa session and will also give opening remarks to the session participants. This 2nd Sherpa meeting will act as a conductor in a choir in orchestrating various substance issues at the G20 meeting at the Sherpa Track, following the implementation of various Working Groups (WG) and Engagement Groups (EG) meetings.

The Co-Sherpa of the G20 Indonesia as well as the Deputy for Coordination of International Economic Cooperation at the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Edi Prio Pambudi said that in one year of the Presidency of the G20 Indonesia, there are more than 400 main events, side events, and Road to G20 Indonesia, so the role of the Sherpas as a "guide" in formulating the substance becomes very crucial, especially in the way of preparing the Leaders' Declaration in Bali later. Until November 2022, ahead of the G20 Summit, various meetings will intensify considering the culmination of holding Indonesia's G20 presidency is approaching.

The 2nd Sherpa Meeting will be held in a hybrid manner with the main meeting being held on 10-11 July 2022 at the Meruorah Hotel Labuan Bajo. There are four sessions, namely (i) Global Health Architecture; (ii) Digitalization; (iii) Energy Transitions; and (iv) Concrete Deliverables. The meeting will be attended by 20 G20 member countries, 9 invited countries, and 10 international organizations.

The series of events started with a Welcoming Dinner located at Kisik Ayana Beach Side Restaurant. Delegates will be treated to a variety of Indonesian food from JoyDay Yili Indonesia and superior Indonesian coffee by Kapal Api Global, which will accompany performances of various traditional Indonesian contemporary dances. The prepared menu is to support the commitment to introduce Indonesian local culinary treasures to the international stage.

After holding the first day of the meeting on 10th July 2022, in the afternoon the G20 Sherpas will be brought to the Sherpa's Talk event by bringing a unique concept of sofa talk on a ship sailing in the waters of Labuan Bajo. Two ships will be prepared to support this meeting, namely Lako Sae and Lako Dia which will bring the delegates to a meeting while enjoying the beautiful waters and views of Labuan Bajo. This concept is expected to melt the atmosphere so that the objectives of the meeting and togetherness among G20 members can be achieved in accordance with the main theme, namely Recover Together, Recover Stronger.

The 2nd Sherpa meeting will present site visits and excursions that delegates can participate in on July 12, 2022. The site visit agenda begins with a coral reef planting procession by divers accompanied by an explanation by Marine Biologist Ayana Komodo. The delegates will be given a certificate as proof that they have contributed to the preservation of coral reefs.

The next event the delegates will go to Messah Island, where a PLN Solar Panel review will be carried out and the delivery of sacrificial animals from PT PLN to the local community.

Secretary of the Ministry for Economic Affairs, who is also assigned as Head of the Joint Secretariat of the Sherpa Track and Finance Track, Susiwijono Moegiarso, said that the PLN Solar Panel showcase agenda on Messah Island is a form of Indonesia's determination and efforts in the energy transition. This issue has become one of the main focuses of discussion at the G20 Indonesia Presidency and one of the key answers in welcoming a better future for this earth.

The delegates will then sail to Komodo Island, Pink Beach and Padar Island. The delegates were invited to trekking to enjoy the beauty of Komodo Island as well as to review the conservation activities of this exotic animal.

The series of events for the 2nd Sherpa meeting will also include workshops and cultural performances. Traditional music performances from East Nusa Tenggara, sasando and exhibitions from local SMEs will color this activity.

At the end of the series of events, the 2nd Sherpa meeting will be closed with a Side Event: Seminar on Blue, Green and Circular Economy. Themed “The Future Platform for Post-Pandemic Development”, this seminar aims to follow up on one of the priorities of Indonesia's G20 Presidency, namely the energy transition. This seminar will also introduce the international community to the importance of utilizing existing resources for sustainable economic development after the pandemic has passed.

Various preparations for this event have been carried out since March 2022, starting with an initial assessment of each candidate venue for the implementation of the activity as well as coordinating with local stakeholders such as the Regional Government, related Ministries/Institutions such as Ministry of Communications and Informatics, the Ministry of Health, security, health and MSMEs. Attention to the handling of airports, especially at Soekarno Hatta and Ngurah Rai, is of particular concern as airports where delegations arrive in transit.

The committee has also carried out a simulation of the implementation of the event on 27-29 June 2022, including internet network technicalities and the implementation of a site visit considering that this method is the first time this method has been implemented during the series of the G20 Indonesia Presidency. The holding of the 2nd Sherpa meeting in Labuan Bajo is expected to repeat the success of the Government in the 1st Sherpa meeting in December 2021. (dep7/rep/ag/alr/fsr)
