Sherpa G20 Receives Full Support from UI, from the submission of the Policy Brief to the use of the Red and White Electric Bus
Yogyakarta, September 26th 2022
The implementation of the 2022 Indonesian G20 Presidency series of events requires collaboration from all parties, both from the Government, SOEs, Academics, and Private sectors. Inclusive collaboration between the Government and Academics is a real step in supporting the successful implementation of the 2022 Indonesian G20 Presidency, including the one that has been established so far with the University of Indonesia(UI).
On the sidelines of the preparation for the 3rd G20 Sherpa Meeting in Yogyakarta, a ceremony was held to hand over the "University of Indonesia Policy Brief Collection Book for the 2022 Indonesian G20 Presidency", and at the same time, it was followed by the "Use of the University of Indonesia's Red and White Electric Bus" on Monday (26/09). This event is a tangible form of support from the university, namely the University of Indonesia, for the implementation of the 2022 Indonesian G20 Presidency series of events.
As one of the main partners of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs in Indonesia’s G20 Presidency, The University of Indonesia has carried out several joint activities, starting from the internship program, the establishment of the Center for Multilateral Economic Cooperation, the G20 Study Center, the deployment of Experts for Working Groups and Engagement Groups, making policy recommendations, up to the holding of National and International Conferences. The International Conference "Boosting Indonesia's Role in G20 Presidency 2022" some time ago was also successful and was also attended by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and the Minister of Finance.
This activity in Yogyakarta began with the handover of the book "Collection of the University of Indonesia Policy Brief for the G20 Indonesia Presidency in 2022" which was carried out by UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro to the Indonesian Co-Sherpa Edi Prio Pambudi and Dian Triansyah Djani. The resulting policy brief is the result of the 2022 G20 Research-Based Policy Grant Program. A total of 40 policy briefs have been compiled covering the three main theme pillars of the G20 Presidency, consisting of 11 policy briefs on the topic of Global Health Architecture, 15 policy briefs for the topic of Digital Transformation, 12 policy briefs for the topic of Energy Transition, and 2 policy briefs for cross-cutting issues.
Furthermore, the handover ceremony for environmentally friendly vehicles in the form of the University of Indonesia Red and White Electric Bus, in support of the 3rd G20 Sherpa Meeting, was handed over by UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro to the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs as Chair of the Joint Secretariat of the Sherpa Track and Finance Track of the G20 Indonesia Presidency 2022. This electric bus is purely the work of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia, from the design to the existing features and facilities, and this bus has local content (domestic component) which is the largest for the category of domestically produced electric buses.
"Support and cooperation from the UI academic community will certainly help provide perspective in this G20 Sherpa meeting, which will finalize the Leaders' Declaration draft, which will be the main output of the G20 Bali Summit in November 2022. The policy brief supports research-based policies and will be used as the main reference in programs or policies at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, especially those related to Indonesia's G20 Presidency," said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Susiwijono in his remarks at the event.
Deputy for Coordination of International Economic Cooperation at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs/Co-Sherpa G20 Indonesia Edi Prio Pambudi added, "We are pleased to receive recommendations from academics regarding the policy brief for the 2022 G20 Indonesia Presidency. This year is very special, because the challenges are complete, starting from the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change issues, and even coupled with the crisis between Ukraine and Russia. So this collection of policy briefs is part of the thoughts of scientists and academics so that they can be used to enrich the concrete results of the G20 Presidency.”
Meanwhile, UI Chancellor Prof. Ari Kuncoro explained that this collection of policy briefs was a form of UI's support to the Government, particularly in realizing the real results of the G20 Presidency. “There are 40 policy briefs that have been combined and summarized, so this is an effort to support research-based policies. For academics, this G20 moment is very important, maybe every 20 or 25 years this rare event can happen again," he explained.
Regarding the use of Electric Buses for the G20 Sherpa Meeting, in line with Indonesia's vision to lead by example in the G20 Presidency, the use of environmentally friendly vehicles is a concrete form of the energy transition pillar. "The local content of this UI Electric Bus is the highest in Indonesia. Of course, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and the Minister of Industry will support that what has been produced on campus must be pushed to the industrial level," said Coordinating Minister Susiwijono.
“The use of the UI Electric Bus is an integral part of global efforts to achieve the SDGs and reduce carbon emissions according to the Paris agreement. For that, I would like to thank the UI academic community,” said Deputy Edi Pambudi. The UI Chancellor added that the bus, which was named the UI Red and White Electric Bus, was a matter of pride because it was the only innovation in Indonesia whose design, control system, and cooling system were designed by UI experts and built by domestic companies. "The results of this work are scientific contributions that can be used to organize various events of the 2022 G20 Indonesia Presidency," concluded Prof. Ari Kuncoro. (dep7/rep/map/fsr/hls)
