B20 Inception Meeting: Coordinating Minister Airlangga Emphasizes the Need for Global Strategy Communication to Ensure Acceleration of Economic Growth
Jakarta, January 27th, 2022
As the Presidency of G20 in 2022, Indonesia will focus on three main issues, namely strengthening the global health architecture, digital-based economic transformation, and energy transition. In the G20 Presidency, Indonesia also strives to create new ideas to accelerate global recovery and make it happen through various real actions for the lives of people across borders and countries.
As is well known, the global economy is currently facing the challenges of uneven recovery and global uncertainty impacting, which have an impact on the economies of developing and developed countries, both for G20 member countries and outside the G20. For this reason, in supporting the G20 to achieve inclusive, strong, and sustainable growth, the Business20 Forum (B20) must be able to bridge concepts and ideas with real actions, so that the G20 outcomes can be implemented in a concrete manner.
"We hope that this event can become a medium for discussion between the Government and all stakeholders, both at the regional and global levels, to communicate strategies to ensure accelerated economic growth in 2022," said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto in his remarks at the "B20 Inception Meeting” event which was held in Jakarta, Thursday (27/01).
Coordinating Minister Airlangga also emphasized the need to find a way to strike a balance between recovery from the pandemic and economic recovery. The reopening of economic, business, and community activities needs to be accompanied by a strengthened health system in controlling the spread of the virus. The pandemic event confirms that targeted health-related policy-making will support a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable economy. Stronger health policies are a key exit strategy.
Meanwhile, concerning in relation to the development of digitalization, Indonesia invites G20 member countries to increase efforts to ensure digital transformation takes place, because innovation and technology will be beneficial for those who can manage it. The B20 Forum is expected to share knowledge on how to prepare workers and human resources for future jobs.
In an effort to accelerate the clean energy transition, particularly in developing countries, firm commitments have been made at the G20 Summit in Rome and COP26 Glasgow. With the help of the B20 Forum, the G20 can move quickly to energy sector implementation by putting in place a framework for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.
Thus, the business sector and the Government must be able to synergize and what is no less important is that at the B20 Forum, each country must be able to put aside political differences and increase cooperation with other B20 members.
“We also need to partner with the business sector to ensure a greener recovery. Without real and sustainable financial support, we may not be able to achieve the target of 'global net- zero emissions by the middle of this century, in 2060,” concluded Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
The B20 Inception Meeting, which was officially opened by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo, was also attended online and offline, including the ranks of the Ministers of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet, Chair B20 Shinta Kamdani, Chair of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Arsjad Rasyid, Executive Chairman of the World Economic Klaus Schwab Forum, and delegates from various B20 countries.
